A winch is only one part of the recovery path. Vehicle weight, resistance, mounting structure, electrical capacity, line, fairlead and rated connection points must work together. Start with the truck as it travels—not an empty curb-weight number.

A common planning starting point is at least 1.5 times the truck’s loaded weight. Mud, slope, suction, rigging and duty cycle can require more capacity, so confirm the complete recovery use and mounting system.
Synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle but needs protection from abrasion, heat and UV exposure. Steel cable tolerates abrasion differently but is heavier and can store more energy when damaged or kinked. Both require inspection and safe handling.
